Data Center Relocation
What It Costs to Move a Data Center, the Relocation Checklist and Plan, and How to Choose Movers

The physical move averages about $10,000 a rack, and the bigger costs sit around it: overlapping rent, new circuits and downtime risk. We find the new space, put part of the move into the new provider's contract, and coordinate the movers.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Data center relocation is physically moving servers, storage and network equipment from one site to another: shutting them down, packing, transporting, re-racking and bringing them back up. The move itself averages about $10,000 per rack, or $50,000 to $150,000 for a server room under 10 racks. A mid-market move takes 6 to 16 weeks from planning to cutover. The costs that decide the budget sit around the move: paying for both sites, new circuits and the new contract, and the new provider can often cover part of them.

Relocation and migration are often used interchangeably, but they are different jobs. A data center relocation, or data center move, physically transports the equipment you keep. A data center migration moves workloads, sometimes over the network and sometimes onto new hardware or into the cloud. Most exits involve both. This page covers the physical move: what it costs, the relocation project plan and checklist, moving day, and how to choose data center movers. Workload strategy is on the data center migration guide.

What drives the cost of a data center move

Rack count and density

The biggest driver. Each rack is de-installed, packed, moved, re-racked, recabled and tested.

Distance and access

Across town or across the country, plus loading docks, freight elevators and building rules at both ends.

The downtime window

Overnight and weekend moves cost more in labor, and a short window needs more crew.

Insurance

Full replacement-value cargo coverage for the equipment in transit, priced on its value.

Network

New circuits and cross-connects at the destination, and often a temporary link between sites.

Special handling

Storage arrays, mainframes, tape libraries and GPU servers need specialist packing and more care.

THE PART MOST BUYERS MISS
The new provider wants your deployment and will often pay for part of getting it there: free or reduced months while you run both sites, waived installation fees, credits toward the move, or billing that ramps as racks arrive. Those concessions have to be negotiated before you sign, and they can be worth more than the movers' invoice. What everything around the move costs is on data center cost.

Data Center Relocation Project Plan

Work back from the date you need to be out of the old site. Carrier circuits and the new contract usually set the critical path, not the move itself, which is why the first weeks matter most.

Transit insurance at full replacement value
Spare drives, power supplies and cables on hand

Moving day

Shutdown in a planned order, applications first
Equipment packed in original cartons or purpose-built cases
Climate-controlled, air-ride transport
Chain of custody from rack to rack
Power-on in a planned order, core network first
Every system tested against a sign-off list

After the move

Monitoring for failures in the first week
Warranty and support contracts updated with the new address
Old site restored and handed back
Old circuits and cross-connects cancelled
Asset register updated
Decommissioning of anything left behind

Moving Day: How a Physical Data Center Move Works

THE MOVE WINDOW
From shutdown to sign-off
1
Shut down in order. Applications first, then databases, storage and finally the core network, following the plan.
2
Pack for the trip. Original cartons or purpose-built cases, anti-static protection, drives sometimes removed and moved separately.
3
Transport under custody. Climate-controlled, air-ride trucks, a named crew, and a record of every device from rack to rack.
4
Re-rack and recable. Into the new cabinets exactly as mapped, so nothing has to be traced on the night.
5
Power on in order. Core network first, then storage, then servers. Older drives and power supplies are the parts most likely to fail on restart, so spares are on site.
6
Test and sign off. Every system checked against the list before the window closes, with a rollback plan if something will not come back.

Server relocation and server room relocation

Server relocation is the same process at a smaller scale: a few servers or a single room moving to colocation or a new office. It is usually done in one weekend, often by the same specialist movers, and it is the most common reason a company first moves into colocation. Many IT relocation services cover office moves too; for a data center or server room, ask specifically about server handling, insurance and chain of custody.

Data center consolidation

Consolidation moves several sites into fewer, usually after an acquisition or to cut costs. It is relocation and migration together, run in waves over months, and the destination decision drives the savings. See wholesale colocation for larger footprints.

Choosing Data Center Movers and Relocation Companies

Data center relocation services range from general IT movers to specialists who move nothing but data centers. These are the questions that separate them.

ExperienceHow many data center moves have you done of this size and type, and can we speak to two recent clients?
InsuranceDo you carry full replacement-value cargo insurance, or only limited carrier liability?
TransportClimate-controlled, air-ride trucks, with GPS tracking and a named crew?

Data Center Relocation Risks, and How to Avoid Them

Equipment that will not restart

Older drives and power supplies fail most often after a shutdown. Keep spares on site and have backups verified before the move.

Circuits not ready

Carrier lead times are the usual critical path. Order circuits as soon as the destination is signed, and test them before moving day.

A missed notice date

Miss the non-renewal window at the old site and the contract can renew. See the data center lease guide for typical notice periods.

An insurance gap

Limited carrier liability does not cover the value of servers and storage. Buy full replacement-value cargo coverage.

Data Center Relocation: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to relocate a data center?

The relocation project averages about $10,000 per rack, according to a long-cited Info-Tech Research Group benchmark. 2026 estimates run $50,000 to $150,000 for a server room under 10 racks, $200,000 to $750,000 for 10 to 50 racks, and $1 million and up for large consolidations. Overlapping rent, new circuits and the new contract come on top.

How long does a data center relocation take?

Six to 16 weeks from planning to cutover for a mid-market move, with the destination contract and carrier circuits usually setting the pace. The physical move itself is often a single weekend. Start at least six months before the old contract ends.

What is the difference between data center relocation and migration?

Relocation physically moves the equipment you keep to a new site. Migration moves workloads, over the network, onto new hardware or into the cloud. Most data center exits involve both.

What should a data center relocation checklist include?

An inventory with serial numbers and power draw, a cable map and labels, verified backups, circuits live at the new site, full-value transit insurance, spares on hand, an ordered shutdown and power-on plan, chain of custody, a test sign-off list, and the old site handed back.

What does a data center relocation project plan look like?

Decide and sign the destination about 16 to 12 weeks out, order circuits and give notice 12 to 8 weeks out, book movers and insurance 8 to 4 weeks out, rehearse and freeze changes in the final weeks, then move, test and stabilize.

How do you move servers to a new data center with minimal downtime?

Move in waves, with circuits and the network live at the new site first. Shut down and power on in a planned order, keep spares on hand, and run critical systems in parallel or fail them over to a secondary site during the move.

Can the new colocation provider pay for part of the move?

Often, yes. Free or reduced months while you run both sites, waived installation fees, move credits and ramped billing are common concessions for a customer bringing a deployment, but they have to be negotiated before you sign.

What are the biggest risks in a data center relocation?

Equipment that fails on restart, circuits that are not ready, a missed notice date at the old site, gaps in insurance, and unclear scope between the movers and your team. A rehearsal, spares and written scope reduce all of them.

Do I need insurance to move servers?

Yes. Standard carrier liability is often limited and far below the replacement value of servers and storage, so buy cargo insurance at full replacement value for the move.

How do I choose data center movers?

Ask about experience with moves your size, full replacement-value insurance, climate-controlled air-ride transport, background-checked crews and chain of custody, manufacturer support, and exactly what is included beyond transport.

What is server relocation?

Moving one or a few servers, or a server room, to a new location such as a colocation facility. It follows the same process as a data center move at a smaller scale, usually in a single weekend.

What is data center consolidation?

Moving several data centers or server rooms into fewer sites, usually after an acquisition or to cut costs. It combines relocation and migration and usually runs in waves over several months.

Will moving servers affect the warranty?

It can. Check your support contracts before the move, use movers who coordinate with the manufacturer where required, and update the address on every contract afterward.

What happens to the old data center after the move?

It has to be decommissioned: equipment you are not keeping removed and disposed of securely, data destroyed, and the space restored and handed back. See data center decommissioning.

What does it cost to use Metro Colo Advisory for a relocation?

Nothing for placement: the provider you move to pays us, and we negotiate the move concessions into its contract. We also connect you with vetted movers.
