Proxmox vs VMware
Cost, Subscriptions, Features and How to Migrate VMware to Proxmox
Proxmox is free to run, and its optional subscriptions are priced per CPU socket, not per core. Here is how it compares with VMware after Broadcom, what a production estate really costs, and where your Proxmox estate should run. Facing a renewal? Get My Free Renewal ReviewSince Broadcom moved VMware to per-core subscriptions, Proxmox vs VMware (or VMware vs Proxmox, depending on where you start) has become one of the most searched comparisons among VMware alternatives, because Proxmox removes most of the license bill. The real questions are whether Proxmox is ready for your production workloads, what support you need, and how long the move takes. This page covers all three, independently: we do not sell Proxmox or VMware subscriptions, and we price every path, including staying.

Host count, cores per host, vSphere version, renewal date and the quote.
A first read on whether Proxmox suits your estate once support, hardware and operations are counted, the other paths worth pricing, and roughly what is at stake.
If staying on VMware is the right call, we will say so. Firm quotes for other paths still give you leverage at renewal.
If you move, the provider you choose pays us. If you renew, the review is still free.

Is Proxmox Free? Proxmox Pricing and Subscriptions
Yes. Proxmox VE is open-source software under the GNU AGPLv3 license, free to download and run in production, with every feature included. What Proxmox sells is an optional subscription, priced per occupied CPU socket per year, that adds the tested enterprise update repository and support. Core count does not affect the price, and every node in a cluster must carry the same tier. Most businesses running production workloads buy one.
| Tier | Per CPU socket per year | Support | Updates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community | €120 (about $140) | Community forum only | Enterprise repository |
| Basic | €370 (about $425) | 3 tickets a year, next business day | Enterprise repository |
| Standard | €550 (about $630) | 10 tickets a year, 4-hour response, remote support | Enterprise repository |
| Premium | €1,100 (about $1,265) | Unlimited tickets, 2-hour response, remote support | Enterprise repository |
Proxmox list prices, net of VAT, as of October 2026. Dollar figures are approximate at about $1.15 per euro.
Metro Colo Advisory calculation: VVF at about $135 per core per year with VMware's 16-core minimum per processor; Proxmox Standard at €550 per socket per year, about $630. The bigger the processor, the bigger the gap. Free to cite with a link to this page.
Proxmox vs VMware Cost: A Worked Example
A company runs 10 hosts, each with two 12-core processors: 240 physical cores in 20 sockets. VMware bills 320 cores after its 16-core minimum per processor. Proxmox charges per socket, so the core count does not matter. The figures are illustrative, at list.
| Option | How it is billed | Five-year cost |
|---|---|---|
| VMware Cloud Foundation | 320 cores at about $350 a year | About $560,000 |
| VMware vSphere Foundation | 320 cores at about $135 a year | About $216,000 |
| Proxmox, Premium support | 20 sockets at €1,100 a year | About $127,000 |
| Proxmox, Standard support | 20 sockets at €550 a year | About $63,000 |
Metro Colo Advisory calculation from Proxmox's published subscription prices at about $1.15 per euro and VMware prices as widely reported. Excludes hardware, staff time, third-party tools and migration effort. Free to cite with a link to this page.
Who saves the most
Estates on high-core processors. As the chart above shows, Proxmox charges the same for a 64-core socket as an 8-core one, while VMware bills every core.
What the subscription leaves out
The engineering time your team takes on, any local support partner you add, backup and monitoring tools, and the migration itself.
The real trade-off
The license saving is large and certain. The cost that varies is skills: teams new to Linux and Proxmox spend the first year learning, and some add a support partner.

Proxmox vs VMware Features
Where VMware still leads
Network virtualization with NSX, automated load balancing across hosts with DRS, the deepest automation and partner ecosystem, and certification by the largest enterprise software vendors.
Where they are even
Clustering and high availability, live migration between hosts, snapshots and replication, and support from the major backup vendors.
Where Proxmox is stronger
Cost, with no license fee and per-socket support; built-in Ceph and ZFS storage; containers alongside virtual machines; and no lock-in to a single vendor's pricing decisions.
Proxmox vs ESXi
ESXi is VMware's bare-metal hypervisor. Proxmox VE runs virtual machines on KVM, the hypervisor built into Linux, alongside lightweight LXC containers. Both deliver strong performance for typical enterprise workloads; the practical differences are licensing, management tooling and how much of the platform your own team operates.
Proxmox clusters, high availability and Ceph
Proxmox includes clustering, high availability and live migration without extra licenses, and integrates Ceph for shared, replicated storage across nodes. A production cluster typically starts at three nodes so the cluster keeps quorum if one fails. Proxmox Datacenter Manager adds a single view across multiple clusters, the closest equivalent to running several vCenter instances.
Is Proxmox Right for Your Estate?
A strong fit if
License cost is your main pressure; your team is comfortable with Linux; most workloads are standard virtual machines; and you can add a support partner for round-the-clock coverage if you need it.
Look harder if
You depend on NSX or deep vCenter automation; your critical applications require VMware certification; or your team has no Linux experience and no budget for training or a partner.
Proxmox vs Hyper-V, Nutanix and XCP-ng
Proxmox is one of four main VMware alternatives. Here is how it compares with the other three.
| Platform | How it is priced | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proxmox VEKVM, open source | Free; optional support per CPU socket | Linux-capable teams where license cost is the main pressure | Your team carries more of the engineering |
| Microsoft Hyper-VPart of Windows Server | Windows Server license per core, one-time | Windows-heavy estates already licensing Windows Server Datacenter | Less advantage for Linux-heavy estates; see Hyper-V vs VMware |
| NutanixAHV, commercial platform | Subscription per physical core, by quote | Estates that want one vendor accountable for the whole stack | Costs more and often comes with new hardware; see Nutanix vs VMware |
| XCP-ngXen, open source | Free; optional support from Vates | Teams already familiar with Citrix Hypervisor | Smaller community than Proxmox, without built-in Ceph or containers |
Proxmox vs Hyper-V is the most common of these comparisons: Hyper-V wins where Windows Server Datacenter is already paid for, and Proxmox wins for Linux-heavy estates.
How to Migrate VMware to Proxmox
A VMware to Proxmox migration is mostly planning. Proxmox's built-in import wizard brings virtual machines across from ESXi; what takes time is designing the cluster and storage, replacing the tools that depended on vCenter, and moving production without disruption.
For a production estate, plan on months rather than weeks. With vSphere 8 general support ending on October 11, 2027, most estates need to decide by early 2027. See the data center migration guide.
Where Should Your Proxmox Estate Run?
Proxmox removes most of the license bill, which makes the hardware and the room it sits in the largest remaining costs. Switching platforms is the natural moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate them. These are the four options; Proxmox costs the same in each.
Your own data center
Reuse existing hosts where they are. Lowest change, but the facility, power and hardware refresh remain yours.
Colocation
Your servers in a professional data center, with power, cooling and connectivity handled. See what colocation is.
Bare metal
Rent dedicated servers by the month and run Proxmox on them, with no hardware to buy. See bare metal.
Managed private cloud
A provider runs the platform on dedicated hardware for you, so your team stops operating infrastructure. See private cloud providers.

Proxmox vs VMware: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Proxmox free?
Yes. Proxmox VE is open-source software under the GNU AGPLv3 license, free to download and run, including in production, with every feature included. The optional paid subscription adds the tested enterprise update repository and support.
How much does a Proxmox subscription cost?
Proxmox VE subscriptions are priced per occupied CPU socket per year: €120 for Community, €370 for Basic, €550 for Standard and €1,100 for Premium, net of VAT. Every node in a cluster must use the same tier.
Is Proxmox licensed per core?
No. Proxmox subscriptions are priced per physical CPU socket, so a 64-core processor costs the same as an 8-core one. VMware, by contrast, bills every core with a 16-core minimum per processor.
Do we need a Proxmox subscription for production?
It is not required, but most businesses buy one for production. It provides the enterprise repository with tested updates and access to Proxmox support, and the cost is small next to a VMware renewal.
Is Proxmox cheaper than VMware?
Yes, by a wide margin on licensing. For a 10-host estate with two 12-core processors per host, five years of Proxmox Standard support costs about $63,000 at list, against about $216,000 for VMware vSphere Foundation and about $560,000 for VMware Cloud Foundation. Staff time and migration effort come on top.
Proxmox vs ESXi: which is better?
Both are mature bare-metal platforms with comparable performance for typical enterprise workloads. ESXi has the larger enterprise ecosystem and vendor certifications; Proxmox costs far less and includes clustering, high availability and Ceph storage without extra licenses.
Is Proxmox ready for enterprise production?
For many estates, yes, and thousands of businesses run it in production. The limits are lighter enterprise support than VMware, fewer vendor certifications for top-tier applications, and more engineering carried by your own team. Proxmox has added North American 24x7 support.
How do you migrate VMware to Proxmox?
Proxmox VE includes an import wizard that connects to VMware ESXi and imports virtual machines directly. Most estates pilot a group first, then migrate in waves with both platforms running side by side.
How long does a VMware to Proxmox migration take?
For a production estate, plan on months rather than weeks. The conversion itself is well supported; the time goes into planning, replacing tools that depended on vCenter, training the team and moving production without disruption.
Does Proxmox support high availability and shared storage?
Yes. Clustering, high availability and live migration are built in, with Ceph for replicated shared storage across nodes, plus ZFS, NFS and iSCSI. A production cluster typically starts at three nodes.
What replaces vCenter in Proxmox?
Each Proxmox cluster is managed through its built-in web interface, from any node. Proxmox Datacenter Manager adds a single view across multiple clusters.
Proxmox vs Hyper-V: which should we choose?
Hyper-V suits Windows-heavy estates already paying for Windows Server Datacenter. Proxmox suits Linux-heavy estates and teams comfortable with open-source tooling and optional paid support.
When do we need to decide?
vSphere 8 general support ends on October 11, 2027, and a production migration takes months, so most estates need a decision by early 2027, before their next VMware renewal.
Where should our Proxmox estate run?
On your own hardware, in colocation, on rented bare-metal servers, or with a managed private cloud provider that runs Proxmox for you. Switching platforms is the natural moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate the hardware, and we price each option at no cost to you.
Do I pay anything to use Metro Colo Advisory?
No for the first read and for placement: if you move and use us to place the new environment, the provider you choose pays us. A fixed-fee decision analysis is available for large estates that want the full case in writing, only if you ask for it.
