Hyper-V vs VMware
Cost, Licensing, Features and How to Convert VMware to Hyper-V
For Windows-heavy estates, Hyper-V is often already paid for. Here is how the two compare after Broadcom, what the switch really costs, and where your Hyper-V estate should run. Facing a renewal? Send us your quote for a Free VMware Renewal Review, with a reply within 24 hours.
Get My Free Renewal ReviewSince Broadcom's licensing changes, Hyper-V vs VMware (or VMware vs Hyper-V, depending on where you start) has become the most common comparison for companies weighing VMware alternatives, because many of them already pay for Hyper-V without using it. The hypervisor is a role inside Windows Server, so the real comparison is Windows Server licensing against a VMware subscription, plus the work of converting VMware virtual machines and replacing the tools that depend on vCenter. This page covers both, independently: we do not sell Microsoft or VMware licenses, and we price every path, including staying.

Hyper-V vs VMware Cost: A Worked Example
Hyper-V cost is really Windows Server licensing cost, so the comparison is a one-time core license against a yearly subscription. A company runs 10 hosts, each with two 12-core processors: 240 physical cores. VMware bills 320 cores after its 16-core minimum per processor. Windows Server needs 24 core licenses per host, since its minimums (8 per processor, 16 per server) are already met. The figures are illustrative, at list.
| Option | How it is billed | Five-year licensing cost |
|---|---|---|
| VMware Cloud Foundation | 320 cores at about $350 a year | About $560,000 |
| VMware vSphere Foundation | 320 cores at about $135 a year | About $216,000 |
| Hyper-V, buying Datacenter | 240 core licenses at about $6,771 per 16, once | About $101,600, plus Software Assurance if you add it |
| Hyper-V, already licensed for Datacenter | Datacenter already on every host for the Windows guests | No additional hypervisor licensing |

The biggest saving is hidden
Many VMware estates already license Windows Server Datacenter on every host to cover their Windows guests. For them, Hyper-V adds no hypervisor licensing at all.
What the license price leaves out
Software Assurance if you want upgrade rights, client access licenses, System Center if you need it at scale, backup and monitoring tools, and the migration itself.
Hyper-V vs VMware Features
Where VMware still leads
Network virtualization with NSX, automated load balancing across hosts with DRS, a single polished console in vCenter, and the broadest third-party ecosystem.
Where they are even
High availability through clustering, live migration between hosts, built-in replication, and support from the major backup vendors.
Where Hyper-V is stronger
Licensing cost for Windows estates, tight integration with Windows Server and Active Directory, and a direct path to Azure through Azure Arc, Azure Local and Azure Site Recovery.
Hyper-V vs ESXi
ESXi is VMware's bare-metal hypervisor, and Hyper-V is Microsoft's. Both run directly on the hardware with strong performance for typical enterprise workloads. The practical differences are in licensing, management tooling and the surrounding ecosystem rather than raw speed.
Is Hyper-V free?
Not as a standalone product anymore. Microsoft's free Hyper-V Server ended with the 2019 version; today Hyper-V is a role included in Windows Server Standard and Datacenter, so it is "free" only in the sense that it comes with a Windows Server license you may already own.
Hyper-V or Azure Local?
Azure Local, formerly Azure Stack HCI, is Microsoft's hyperconverged platform built on Hyper-V, managed through Azure and billed per physical core as a subscription. It suits estates that want Azure services on premises; plain Windows Server Hyper-V suits estates that want to own their licenses outright.

Get My Free Renewal ReviewHow to Convert VMware to Hyper-V
A VMware to Hyper-V migration is mostly planning. The conversion itself is well supported; what takes time is replacing the tools that depended on vCenter and moving production without disruption.
For a production estate, plan on months rather than weeks. With vSphere 8 general support ending on October 11, 2027, most estates need to decide by early 2027. See the data center migration guide.
Where Should Your Hyper-V Estate Run?
Switching hypervisors is the natural moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate the hardware underneath. These are the four options, and the switch costs the same software-wise in each.
Your own hardware
Reuse existing hosts in your server room or data center. Lowest change, but the hardware and facility remain yours to run.
Colocation
Your servers in a professional data center, with power, cooling and connectivity handled. See what colocation is.
Managed private cloud
A provider runs Hyper-V or another platform on dedicated hardware for you. You stop operating infrastructure altogether. See private cloud providers.
Bare metal
Rented dedicated servers you run Hyper-V on, with no hardware to buy. See bare metal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hyper-V better than VMware?
Neither is better for every estate. Hyper-V is usually the better value for Windows-heavy estates, especially those already licensing Windows Server Datacenter, because it can remove most of the hypervisor bill. VMware remains stronger in network virtualization, automation and ecosystem, so estates built on NSX and deep vCenter tooling have more to gain from staying or from a hosted option.
Hyper-V vs VMware: which is cheaper?
For Windows estates, usually Hyper-V. Windows Server is licensed once per core, and Datacenter covers unlimited Windows Server VMs per host, while VMware is a yearly per-core subscription. In a 10-host example, five years of VMware Cloud Foundation costs about $560,000 at list against about $101,600 to buy Windows Server Datacenter, and nothing extra if Datacenter is already licensed.
How do I convert or migrate from VMware to Hyper-V?
Inventory the estate and its dependencies, choose a conversion tool such as System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) or a third-party converter, migrate a pilot group, then move the rest in waves with both platforms running side by side. Replace the backup, monitoring and automation that depended on vCenter before the final cutover.
How long does a VMware to Hyper-V migration take?
Usually months rather than weeks for a production estate, once inventory, testing, cutover windows and application owners are counted. With vSphere 8 general support ending on October 11, 2027, most estates need to decide by early 2027.
Can Hyper-V replace vCenter?
Partly. Windows Admin Center and Hyper-V Manager handle day-to-day management, Failover Cluster Manager handles high availability, and System Center Virtual Machine Manager adds centralized management at scale. Together they cover most vCenter work, though the tooling is spread across more consoles.
Is Hyper-V free?
Not as a standalone product. Microsoft's free Hyper-V Server ended with the 2019 version. Hyper-V is now a role included in Windows Server Standard and Datacenter, so it costs nothing extra if you already own those licenses.
How does Hyper-V licensing work?
Through Windows Server, licensed per physical core in 16-core packs, with minimums of 8 cores per processor and 16 per server, plus client access licenses. Standard edition includes rights to two Windows Server virtual machines per license; Datacenter includes unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed host.
What does Windows Server Datacenter include?
Unlimited Windows Server virtual machines and Hyper-V containers on each licensed host, plus Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines, which Standard edition lacks. It is widely listed at about $6,771 per 16 cores for Windows Server 2025.
Does Hyper-V have an equivalent to vMotion?
Yes. Hyper-V Live Migration moves running virtual machines between hosts without downtime, within a failover cluster or between standalone hosts.
Does Hyper-V have an equivalent to NSX?
Windows Server Datacenter includes software-defined networking, but it is less mature and less widely used than NSX. Estates that rely heavily on NSX micro-segmentation have the most to rebuild when moving to Hyper-V.
Is Hyper-V or ESXi faster?
For typical enterprise workloads, performance is comparable; both are bare-metal hypervisors. The meaningful differences are licensing, management tooling and ecosystem, not raw speed.
Proxmox vs Hyper-V: which should we choose?
Hyper-V suits Windows-heavy estates already paying for Windows Server Datacenter. Proxmox VE suits Linux-heavy estates and teams that want open-source software with optional paid support. See VMware alternatives for both.
Should we use Azure Local instead of Hyper-V?
Azure Local, formerly Azure Stack HCI, is built on Hyper-V and managed through Azure, billed per physical core as a subscription. It suits estates that want Azure services on premises; plain Windows Server Hyper-V suits estates that want to own their licenses outright.
Where should our Hyper-V estate run?
On your own hardware, in colocation, on rented bare metal, or with a managed private cloud provider that runs Hyper-V for you. If your servers are due for refresh, the switch is a good moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate them, and we price each option at no cost to you.
Do I pay anything to use Metro Colo Advisory?
No for the first read and for placement: if you move and use us to place the new environment, the provider you choose pays us. A fixed-fee decision analysis is available for large estates that want the full case in writing, only if you ask for it.
