THE SHORT ANSWER
Nutanix vs VMware is the closest like-for-like comparison among VMware alternatives. Nutanix replaces vSphere with its AHV hypervisor, vSAN with its own storage and vCenter with Prism, licensed per physical core with the hypervisor included. It costs well below VMware Cloud Foundation for the same full stack, but it is not automatically cheaper than VMware vSphere Foundation, and the move often comes with new hardware. That hardware refresh is also the moment to decide where the estate should run.

Since Broadcom moved VMware to per-core subscriptions sold only in bundles, Nutanix vs VMware (or VMware vs Nutanix, depending on where you start) has become the comparison larger estates run first, because Nutanix is the one alternative that replaces compute, storage, networking and management in a single platform. The real questions are what Nutanix will cost for your core count, whether your existing storage and servers can stay, and how long the migration takes. This page covers all three, independently: we do not sell Nutanix or VMware licenses, and we price every path, including staying.

Nutanix Pricing and Licensing

Nutanix licensing is a subscription to Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI), priced per physical CPU core for one to five years, with the AHV hypervisor included. Nutanix does not publish an on-premises price list, so every Nutanix price is a quote, and quotes vary widely with core count, edition, term and how hard the deal is negotiated. Two things work in your favor against VMware: Nutanix bills the cores you actually have, with no 16-core minimum per processor, and the hypervisor is not a separate line item.

NCI Starter

The entry edition for smaller, simpler clusters, with the core platform and AHV.

NCI Pro

The edition most production estates buy: storage features, networking, encryption and Prism management, with AHV included.

NCI Ultimate

Adds the advanced security and disaster recovery features that are add-ons in Pro, such as microsegmentation and advanced replication.

WHAT NUTANIX PUBLISHES
The only list prices Nutanix publishes are for Nutanix Cloud Clusters in the public cloud. There, NCI Pro on a 64-core AWS bare-metal node runs about $6.66 an hour, or roughly $58,300 a year in software alone. On-premises term pricing is far lower per core and is quoted through Nutanix or a reseller.

Nutanix vs VMware Cost: A Worked Example

A company runs 10 hosts, each with two 12-core processors: 240 physical cores. VMware bills 320 cores after its 16-core minimum per processor. Nutanix licenses the 240 cores that exist. Because Nutanix pricing is quoted, the example shows two per-core rates: about $300 a year, the figure widely reported before discounts, and $150, an illustrative rate for a well-negotiated, multi-year deal. All figures are software only, at list.

Metro Colo Advisory calculation from VMware prices as widely reported and Nutanix per-core rates as widely reported and illustrated; Nutanix pricing is quote-only. Excludes hardware, support upgrades, management add-ons and migration effort. Free to cite with a link to this page.

The comparison that matters

Against VMware Cloud Foundation, Nutanix usually wins clearly on cost for the same full stack. Against vSphere Foundation, it depends on the rate you negotiate and which VCF features you were actually using.

What the license price leaves out

Hardware, if your servers are not on Nutanix's certified list or your storage is not supported; the support tier; management add-ons; backup and monitoring tools; and the migration itself.

Where the savings come from

No 16-core floor, so estates with lower-core processors stop paying for cores they do not have, plus a hypervisor and storage stack that are not billed separately.

Nutanix vs VMware Features

Where VMware still leads

Network virtualization with NSX, the deepest automation ecosystem, the broadest third-party integrations, and the most administrators who already know it.

Where they are even

High availability, live migration between hosts, built-in replication and snapshots, and support from the major backup vendors.

Where Nutanix is stronger

Simpler licensing with the hypervisor included, one console for the whole stack in Prism, one-click upgrades across software and firmware, and cloud portability through NC2.

Nutanix AHV vs VMware ESXi

AHV is Nutanix's hypervisor, built on the open-source KVM, and ESXi is VMware's. Both are bare-metal hypervisors with strong performance for typical enterprise workloads. The practical differences are licensing, since AHV is included with Nutanix while ESXi is billed inside VMware's per-core bundles, and the tooling around each.

What is Nutanix AHV?

Nutanix AHV is the hypervisor included with every edition of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure. It runs the virtual machines and is managed through Prism, alongside Nutanix storage and networking. Most of Nutanix's installed base now runs AHV rather than VMware ESXi on Nutanix hardware.

Nutanix HCI vs vSAN

Nutanix built its business on hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), where storage runs across the same servers as compute, the same model as VMware vSAN. Nutanix now also supports qualified external storage, including Dell PowerFlex and PowerStore and Pure Storage FlashArray, so estates with storage arrays still under support no longer have to replace them to move.

Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2)

NC2 runs the same Nutanix stack on bare-metal instances in AWS and Azure, billed by the hour or with licenses you bring. It suits estates that want to exit a data center quickly or burst into the cloud, though running it full time usually costs more than owning or colocating the hardware.

How to Migrate VMware to Nutanix

A VMware to Nutanix migration is mostly planning. Nutanix Move handles the conversion of virtual machines to AHV; what takes time is confirming the hardware and storage, replacing the tools that depended on vCenter, and moving production without disruption.

SIX STEPS
Migrating from VMware to Nutanix
1
Inventory the estate. Hosts, cores, virtual machines, storage and everything that depends on vCenter: backup, monitoring, automation and scripts.
2
Check the hardware and storage. Confirm which servers are on Nutanix's certified list and whether your storage arrays are supported as external storage.
3
Size and license the platform. Choose the NCI edition, core count and term, and get written quotes for your exact configuration.
4
Pilot with Nutanix Move. Convert a group of virtual machines to AHV, then test performance, drivers, backup and monitoring.
5
Migrate in waves. Move by application, with VMware and Nutanix running side by side until each wave is confirmed. On supported external storage, conversions can happen in place.
6
Decommission and renegotiate. Retire VMware hosts as they empty, and size any remaining VMware renewal to what is actually left.

For a production estate, plan on months rather than weeks. With vSphere 8 general support ending on October 11, 2027, most estates need to decide by early 2027. See the data center migration guide.

Where Should Your Nutanix Estate Run?

Moving to Nutanix often means new servers, and new servers are the natural moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate the room they sit in. These are the four options; the Nutanix license is the same in each.

Your own data center

Keep the hardware where it is. Lowest change, but the facility, power and cooling remain yours to run and refresh.

Colocation

Your new Nutanix cluster in a professional data center, with power, cooling and connectivity handled, and room to grow. See what colocation is.

Managed private cloud

A service provider runs Nutanix on dedicated hardware for you, so you stop operating infrastructure altogether. See private cloud providers.

Public cloud with NC2

The same stack on AWS or Azure bare metal. Fast to start and good for a quick exit, but usually the most expensive way to run full time. See hybrid cloud.

Nutanix vs VMware: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nutanix cheaper than VMware?

Usually cheaper than VMware Cloud Foundation for the same full stack, because Nutanix licenses only the physical cores you have and includes the AHV hypervisor. Against VMware vSphere Foundation it depends on the per-core rate you negotiate, so compare written quotes for your exact core count.

How much does Nutanix cost?

Nutanix does not publish an on-premises price list. Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure is licensed per physical core for one to five years, and pricing is quoted through Nutanix or a reseller. Rates of about $300 per core per year are widely reported before discounts, and large multi-year deals can come in well below that.

How is Nutanix licensed?

As a subscription to Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI), in Starter, Pro and Ultimate editions, priced per physical CPU core. Unlike VMware, there is no published 16-core minimum per processor, and the AHV hypervisor is included.

Is Nutanix AHV free?

AHV is included at no extra cost in every Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure edition. You pay for the NCI license, not for the hypervisor separately.

Nutanix AHV vs VMware ESXi: which is better?

Both are mature bare-metal hypervisors with comparable performance for typical enterprise workloads. ESXi has the larger ecosystem and NSX alongside it; AHV is included in Nutanix licensing and managed with the rest of the stack in Prism.

Can Nutanix use our existing storage?

Increasingly, yes. Nutanix supports qualified external storage, including Dell PowerFlex and PowerStore and Pure Storage FlashArray, with NetApp support in limited availability. Support covers specific models and configurations, so confirm yours first.

Do we need new hardware to move to Nutanix?

Not always. Nutanix runs on certified servers from Nutanix and partners such as Dell, HPE, Lenovo and Cisco, so existing servers on that list can often be reused. Many estates time the move with a hardware refresh, which is also the moment to decide where the hardware should sit.

How do you migrate VMware to Nutanix?

With Nutanix Move, Nutanix's migration tool for converting VMware virtual machines to AHV, typically in waves with both platforms running side by side. Estates on supported external storage can convert in place without copying the data.

How long does a VMware to Nutanix migration take?

For a production estate, plan on months rather than weeks. The conversion itself is well supported; the time goes into planning, replacing tools that depended on vCenter, and moving production without disruption.

Does Nutanix have an equivalent to NSX?

Nutanix Flow provides virtual networking and microsegmentation. It covers what most estates use NSX for, but NSX is more mature, so estates that rely heavily on advanced NSX features have the most to rebuild.

What is Nutanix NC2?

Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) runs the Nutanix stack on bare-metal instances in AWS and Azure, billed hourly or with licenses you bring. It suits fast data center exits and cloud bursting; running it full time usually costs more than owning or colocating the hardware.

Nutanix, Proxmox or Hyper-V: which should we choose?

Nutanix suits estates that want a complete, supported replacement for the VMware stack. Hyper-V suits Windows-heavy estates already paying for Windows Server Datacenter. Proxmox VE suits Linux-heavy estates and teams comfortable with open-source software and optional paid support.

When do we need to decide?

vSphere 8 general support ends on October 11, 2027, and a production migration takes months, so most estates need a decision by early 2027, before their next VMware renewal.

Where should our Nutanix estate run?

On your own hardware, in colocation, with a managed private cloud provider that runs Nutanix for you, or on NC2 in the public cloud. If your servers are due for refresh, the move is the natural moment to decide whether you still want to own and operate them, and we price each option at no cost to you.

Do I pay anything to use Metro Colo Advisory?

No for the first read and for placement: if you move and use us to place the new environment, the provider you choose pays us. A fixed-fee decision analysis is available for large estates that want the full case in writing, only if you ask for it.
