THE SHORT ANSWER
Data centers in Canada are concentrated in three markets: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, with smaller markets in Calgary, Ottawa and Winnipeg. The country’s main interconnection point is 151 Front Street West in downtown Toronto, Canada’s largest carrier hotel and home of the Toronto Internet Exchange, where Cologix and Equinix both operate. Cologix runs 22 Canadian data centers, the largest footprint among our partners, including more than 100,000 square feet in Montreal and the Harbour Centre in Vancouver. Equinix runs 15 Canadian data centers: TR1 at 151 Front Street and TR2 at 45 Parliament Street, plus 13 it bought from Bell Canada in 2020 in Toronto, Calgary, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Winnipeg and two smaller cities. Montreal’s low-cost hydroelectric power makes Quebec the main market for large and dense deployments.

Searches for Toronto colocation, Montreal colocation, colocation in Canada and a Canada data center come from three kinds of buyers: Canadian companies that need their data to stay in Canada, US companies adding a Canadian site for customers or recovery, and networks and cloud providers that need 151 Front Street. This page covers the four main markets, the carrier hotels, data residency, power, and how to get space in Canada at the right rate. If a US market fits your requirement better, we will say so.

Toronto Data Centers and 151 Front Street West

151 Front Street West in downtown Toronto is Canada’s largest and most important carrier hotel and the home of the Toronto Internet Exchange (TorIX), which began there in 1997 and also connects at Equinix TR2 and 905 King Street West. Cologix Toronto runs seven suites in the building as TOR1, now 27,400 square feet after a recent expansion, cooled in part by Enwave’s Deep Lake Water Cooling system, which uses cold water from Lake Ontario. Cologix’s second Toronto site at 905 King Street West holds TOR2 and TOR3, and TOR2 can serve as a diverse bypass to TOR1. For colocation, Toronto buyers usually choose between space inside 151 Front Street and these nearby buildings. Equinix Toronto runs TR1 inside 151 Front Street, home to one of Canada’s largest financial trading ecosystems, and TR2 at 45 Parliament Street, linked to TR1, plus TR4 to TR7 from its Bell Canada purchase. See Cologix data centers, Equinix data centers and data center connectivity.

Montreal Data Centers

Montreal is Canada’s second major market and its main one for large deployments, because Quebec’s hydroelectric power is low-cost and low-carbon. Cologix Montreal, the city’s first colocation provider, runs more than 100,000 square feet across the city, including the carrier hotel at 1250 René-Lévesque West and MTL1 at 625 René-Lévesque West, where the Montreal Internet Exchange (QIX) has core nodes. South of the city, Cologix’s MTL10 campus at 530 Rue Bériault in Longueuil offers more than 250,000 square feet and 39 MW, and recently added 4 MW. Cologix’s Montreal sites are linked by its metro network, so space in Longueuil can reach the downtown carrier hotels. Equinix Montreal runs MT1, from its Bell Canada purchase.

Vancouver and Calgary Data Centers

Vancouver colocation

Vancouver is Canada’s West Coast market and its link across the Pacific. Cologix Vancouver runs VAN1 in the Harbour Centre at 555 West Hastings Street, along with VAN5 in the same building, an 11,000-square-foot, 1.2 MW site it bought from Cyxtera, plus VAN2 at 1050 West Pender Street and VAN3 at 2828 Natal Street.

Calgary data centers

Calgary is Western Canada’s main market outside Vancouver, serving Alberta’s energy and financial companies. Equinix Calgary runs three data centers, CL1 to CL3, which came with its 2020 purchase of 13 Bell Canada data centers. The same deal gave Equinix single sites in Ottawa (OT1), Winnipeg (WI1), Kamloops (KA1) and Saint John (SJ1), which cover regional needs across the country. See Equinix data centers.

Data Residency and Sovereignty in Canada

Many Canadian buyers, especially in government, healthcare and financial services, need their data stored and processed in Canada. That is often the first filter on a Canadian search, ahead of price. Colocation in a Canadian data center keeps the hardware and the data in the country, and a private connection to a Canadian cloud region keeps traffic off the public internet. We confirm which buildings and which cloud on-ramps meet your residency requirement before anything is signed. See compliance colocation and hybrid cloud colocation.

CANADA OR THE US?
If data residency is not a requirement, a US market can be cheaper or have space sooner: New York and Ohio for Toronto-area companies, or the Pacific Northwest for Vancouver. If it is a requirement, the choice is between Canadian markets, and Montreal’s power usually wins for anything large.

Colocation Pricing in Canada

Two things set Canadian pricing apart. First, the city: Toronto space inside 151 Front Street carries a premium for its networks, while Montreal’s low-cost hydro power gives it the edge for anything large or dense. Second, the currency: contracts may be in Canadian or US dollars, and for a US company a Canadian-dollar contract moves with the exchange rate over the term. Providers do not publish list prices. Compare what you are offered with the ranges on our colocation pricing guide, and for a megawatt or more see wholesale colocation and the terms that matter in a data center lease.
