THE SHORT ANSWER
Data centers in Nevada are concentrated in two places: Las Vegas and the Reno area, with about 76 data centers built or planned statewide. Switch, headquartered in Las Vegas, runs the state’s two anchor campuses: the Core Campus in Las Vegas, with more than 2 million square feet of data center space, and the Citadel Campus at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center near Reno, whose first building, TAHOE RENO 1, is 1.3 million square feet and 130 MW. The two are linked by Switch’s 500-mile SUPERLOOP fiber network, about 7 milliseconds apart. Google, Microsoft and Apple also run large data centers in the Reno area. Nevada cuts the sales tax on qualifying data center equipment to 2% and abates 75% of personal property tax for 10 or 20 years, though a September 2026 executive order trimmed the sales tax break.

Searches for Las Vegas colocation and colocation in Nevada come from some of the most valuable buyers we track; advertisers pay around $18 a click for them. Most are West Coast companies looking for space outside California at lower operating costs, enterprises placing a recovery site, and AI teams that need large, dense deployments. This page covers Las Vegas and Reno, Switch’s two campuses, the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, Nevada’s tax abatements and how to get space at the right rate. If another market fits your requirement better, we will say so.

Las Vegas Data Centers: Switch’s Core Campus

Switch Las Vegas is the company’s home: its Core Campus holds more than 2 million square feet of data center space across its LAS VEGAS buildings. LAS VEGAS 10, which opened in 2017, alone added about 350,000 square feet and up to 40 MW. The campus has about 5 milliseconds of connectivity to Los Angeles and a dedicated link of about 7 milliseconds to the Citadel near Reno. Switch is also developing two buildings in the southwest Las Vegas Valley, about 199,000 and 228,000 square feet, designed for specialized AI hardware. Beyond Switch, Google runs a data center in nearby Henderson. Searches for data centers in North Las Vegas and Henderson usually lead to the same short list. For buyers searching data centers in Las Vegas, the practical question is usually which Switch building, hall and density fits. See AI and GPU colocation and wholesale colocation.

Reno Data Centers and the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center

The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC), east of Reno in Storey County, is a business park larger than the city of Denver and one of the largest data center hubs in the country. Switch’s Citadel Campus sits there on a 2,000-acre site next to Tesla’s Gigafactory. Its first building, TAHOE RENO 1, opened in 2017 at about 1.3 million square feet and 130 MW, Switch broke ground on its second and third buildings in April 2024, and the full plan reaches up to 17.4 million square feet and 850 MW. Google and Microsoft run large facilities at TRIC as well, and Apple has operated a data center at the Reno Technology Park since 2012. For Reno colocation, Switch’s Citadel is the main multi-tenant option, which makes Switch Reno the usual starting point. See Utah data centers and Oregon data centers for nearby alternatives.

WHY WEST COAST COMPANIES LOOK AT NEVADA
Reno sits a few hours from the San Francisco Bay Area and Las Vegas a few hours from Los Angeles, both linked by Switch’s SUPERLOOP fiber. For California companies, Nevada offers large campuses and lower operating costs than California, while staying close to their people and customers. See Bay Area colocation and Los Angeles colocation to compare.

Nevada Data Center Tax Abatements

Nevada’s data center program, created in 2015, is one of the most generous in the country, and it is now under review.

Nevada data center abatements
Sales and use taxReduced to 2% on qualifying equipment for 10 or 20 years
Personal property tax75% abatement for 10 or 20 years
10-year requirements10 full-time Nevada employees, wages at or above the statewide average, and at least $25 million invested within five years
20-year requirements50 full-time Nevada employees and at least $100 million invested within five years
TenantsCo-located tenants of a qualifying data center can also apply, with conditions including a minimum two-year agreement to occupy space
September 2026 changeGovernor Lombardo’s executive order removed the local school support tax from the abatement, raising the effective sales tax rate to 4.6%; Attorney General Aaron Ford, running for governor, has promised to pause abatements

What matters for a colocation tenant: if your deployment qualifies, the abatement can lower the tax on equipment you buy for it, and the building’s own abatement can lower its costs. Because the rules are changing, confirm what applies before you sign. Since 2015, Nevada has granted abatements to 14 data centers worth an estimated $461 million. See data center cost.

Las Vegas and Reno Colocation Pricing

Nevada pricing turns on scale and on taxes. Switch’s campuses are built for large deployments, so pricing for a few cabinets and for a multi-megawatt suite work very differently, and whether your deployment or the building qualifies for Nevada’s tax abatement changes the total cost of the equipment you bring. Power per cabinet, term and cross-connects decide the rest. Providers do not publish list prices. Compare what you are offered with the ranges on our colocation pricing guide, and for a megawatt or more see the terms that matter in a data center lease.

Who Nevada Colocation Suits

West Coast companies

California companies moving infrastructure to a lower-cost state within a few hours of the office.

AI and large deployments

Multi-megawatt and dense GPU deployments on Switch’s large campuses. See GPU rental if renting fits better than owning.

Recovery and second sites

A recovery site outside California, or a primary and recovery pair across Las Vegas and Reno. See disaster recovery colocation.

Cloud and hybrid

Companies moving steady workloads off the public cloud. See cloud repatriation and hybrid cloud colocation.

Nevada and Nearby Markets

Nevada competes with the rest of the West for large deployments. The usual comparisons are Utah and Oregon for power and scale, Phoenix for the Southwest, and Los Angeles and the Bay Area when staying in California matters. See the provider comparison for how operators differ.
